It is a fourth month we can enjoy our library.
So far, we have collected 740 books, including over 100 for children and teenagers. Almost all of them were kindly donated by our borrowers, friends and families in Poland. Thanks to The Big Lottery Fund, we also could buy new polish books.
We estimate to encrease our bibliotheca up to 1000 books till end of this year.
We have also changed library's rules - since now, non-PAA members can borrow up to 3 books and PAA members - up to 7 books.
Pawel Glowacki stepped down as a Vice-President and member of the Executive Committee of Polish Association Aberdeen as of the 24th of June 2010. Pawel will still be our volunteer and help with various future projects.
On Saturday 1st May, Polish Library in Aberdeen had a big opening with guests from Aberdeen City Council and University of Aberdeen, PAA memebers and friends.
It's hard to believe that in such a short time, we have come from an idea to a real library. It wouldn't be possible without the financial help from Big Lottery Fund Scotland (financial support of £3.900) and books donated by National Library in Warsaw (over 100 books). We have started cooperation with polish bookstores in London and Glasgow - they will send us a few new books every month for free.
But the beginning was here, in Aberdeen. Polish community has donated over 200 books!
The library could became reality because of hard work of PAA members - thank you all so much!

Polish Association Aberdeen would like to invite Polish people in Aberdeen to express their feelings by signing the condolence book, which will be later sent to the Chancellery of the President office. The condolence book is available to sign for the whole week, Monday to Friday, 1pm - 9pm and Saturday-Sunday, 9am - 2pm at our offices, at 35A Union Street. We hope that not only Poles but also Scots who have Polish friends will show up to sign the book.
Deeply moved by the tragic airplane crash in Smolensk, Russia in which President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his wife and numerous Polish officials lost their lives we express our sorrow, compassion and solidarity with the victims' families.
This year the WORD Festival is including a Polish writer for the first time: Stefan Chwin is coming to read from his work and answer questions. Since the readings and questions/answers will be in Polish and English ( and books will be on sale in both languages for those who want to buy them afterwards) , it is hoped that many members of the Polish community will attend this event. It’s on Sunday 16th May at 3pm in the King’s College Centre at Aberdeen University.
Stefan Chwin - Born in 1949, a novelist and essayist. Chwin also writes adventure-fantasy tales for younger readers and illustrates them himself. He has also written critical and historical studies of literature. He lives in Gdańsk and works at the university there. He has won Andreas Gryphius' Prize in 1999. Source: www.culture.pl

Following the guilty plea at the High Court in Glasgow earlier this morning, related to the brutal attack on a Polish national Jaroslaw Janeczek, Polish Association Aberdeen would like to issue the following statement:
"What happened to Mr. Janeczek in July was a senseless attack that shocked not only the whole Polish Community, but all people living in the Tillydrone area of Aberdeen.
We all wish Jaroslaw a quick recovery and would like to thank Grampian Police for their hard work over the last couple of months and hope that both offenders will soon hear the sentence adequate to the scale of their violent attack"

In May 2009, after a few years of hard work, the Polish Saturday School - called "The Sunny School" - opened for the first time.
The School is located at Harlaw Academy, Aberdeen. Children (age 6-14) learn Polish language, culture and history of Poland. All teaching and non-teaching staff are volunteers with adequate educational background.
